What to expect from couples therapy
You can expect your therapist to provide compassion and instill healthy accountability. Often, poor communication skills are simply rooted in the fact that we were not taught how to express emotions, resolve conflicts, or ask for what we need. Your couples therapist can model skills and provide tools to communicate more effectively so you can get more of what you want from your partner.
Do you provide individual counseling for couples?
If clinically appropriate I will meet with partners for 1:1 sessions at certain points in the therapy process. These 1:1 sessions are still within the context of the couple’s therapeutic goals and I often offer it to both partners. This is different from individual counseling which I may recommend the partner(s) to engage in to treat severe mental health issues, substance use concerns, and/or emotional regulation skills.
